Job Posting: Tax Administrator

Temporary | Full-Time

Together Against Poverty Society is hiring a full-time, permanent position for a Tax Administrator. The deadline for applications is 4pm PST on Friday, January 21, 2022. Located in Victoria on the territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) peoples, TAPS is one of the largest anti-poverty organizations on Vancouver Island. TAPS specializes in face-to-face legal advocacy services. Job Description (Nature of the Position)

The primary job responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • Preparing tax packages for our drop off program

  • Helping front desk volunteers receive tax packages and schedule tax based appointments.

  • Printing tax returns that have been completed by the tax volunteers and contacting clients for pickup of filed taxes

  • Collecting stats from printed tax returns

  • Responding to phone messages and emails with questions about the operations of the tax program

  • Working with the Tax Coordinator, Staff, and Tax Volunteers to respond to all other client questions about tax filing

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Education, and Skills

The successful applicant must:

  1. Be familiar with Windows or Mac operating system, Microsoft Office, and have general computer competency;

  2. Be a good communicator who is able to accommodate and work effectively with people with disabilities.
     

All applicants must have a positive and non-judgmental attitude towards low-income clients, and understand the importance of confidentiality and professional ethics in representing clients.
 

The following skills would be beneficial:
 

  1. Be familiar with the filing of Canadian income tax and what is required in order to complete a tax filing

  2. Be familiar with the CRA’s volunteer tax program (CVITP), or be accredited as a CVITP volunteer

  3. Have a general understanding of federal and provincial benefits connected to the filing of income tax
     

Hours of Work and Compensation

​This position is full-time (5 days/week or 35 hours/week). TAPS staff are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 374, and this position is covered by the TAPS Collective Agreement. 4 days/week (28 hours) or 3 days/week (21 hours) may also be possible if desired. 

Under the TAPS collective agreement, this position pays $28.56/hr, with a 3 or 4 month probationary period. Employees work a 7-hour work day with an unpaid 1-hr lunch and paid breaks. TAPS is open from 9-4, and closed from 12-1 for lunch. Start and end time of the work day are flexibile provided the open office hours are covered.

Start Date and Duration of Position


The start date for the position is mid-February, 2022. This position is temporary and will run for 4 months from the start date. 

COVID-19 Protocols and Sick/Vacation

The TAPS office is open and this position is for in-office work. In-person interactions are presently minimized to the greatest extent possible. Full-time staff are given a 15 paid sick days and 20 paid vacation days annually, with part-time and temporary staff pro-rated accordingly. Questions about our work from home structure are welcome, as it will vary depending on the state of the pandemic.
