JOB POSTING:  Tax Coordinator




The following is a job posting to join Together Against Poverty Society as the coordinator of our tax program. This posting is for a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension into a permanent position. The posting is open for applications and closes on June 21st, 2019.


The TAPS tax program provides assistance to low-income people in the Greater Victoria Area with the filing of their income tax returns, specializing in individuals on provincial and federal disability benefits. Last year our tax volunteers helped prepare 1,766 tax returns which generated over $2.1 million in much needed refunds and credit.

Job Description (Nature of the Position)


The primary job responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  1. Coordinate and schedule the volunteer tax preparers in our tax program;

  2. Manage volunteer enrollment in the CRA’s CVITP Program;

  3. When required, help individuals file their past and current year income taxes so that they can enjoy the income tax benefits to which they are entitled;

  4. Coordinate outreach programs for the Volunteer Tax Program;

  5. On occasion draft literary pieces for our newsletter Taproot and our website, and in consultation with management help with the drafting of press releases and communications relating to your work;

  6. Maintain records and statistics for reporting to funders about the program;

  7. Assist the rest of staff with the general duties of the office, which are shared by all staff (for example: kitchen cleanliness, front desk cover, TAPS fundraising events).


Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Education, and Skills


The successful applicant must:

  1. Meet the requirements to be a tax filer through Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (CVITP) program (have no convictions for tax fraud or other tax related regulatory offences, and be up to date on the filing of their taxes);

  2. Be familiar with Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office, and have general computer competency;

  3. Have experience using income tax preparation software to prepare income tax returns (preferably Ufile);

  4. Be a good communicator who is able to accommodate and work effectively with people with disabilities.


The following would also be assets in the position:

  1. Previous volunteer experience with the CRA’s CVITP Program;

  2. A degree or certificate in accounting or comparable educational or work experience;

  3. Knowledge about the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP);

  4. Lived experience with disability.


Hours of Work and Compensation

This position is full-time (this position is eligible for either 5 or 4 days/week depending on the desire of the successful applicant), with a seven hour work day placed between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM on weekdays. Applicants must be able to work on Thursdays, which is the day of our drop-in tax clinic. As per the collective agreement the position pays $22/hr during the three-month probationary period, and $26.50/hr for the remainder of the term of the contract.

This position is a one-year contract to cover the leave of another employee. At the completion of the term there is a possibility of extension into a full-time position. TAPS is a member of CUPE Local 374, and terms of employment are covered under our collective agreement.
