Together Against Poverty Society (TAPS) is hiring a staff lawyer to complement our established legal advocacy programs. This is a full-time (5 days a week) permanent position which includes extended health benefits and payment of all relevant Law Society insurance and practice fees. The start date is negotiable, but an immediate start date is preferred.
Job Description (Nature of the Position)
The primary job responsibilities for this position are as follows:
work with the TAPS Supervising Lawyer to supervise and assist the TAPS legal advocates to provide legal information, summary advice, and representation to clients primarily in the areas of Residential Tenancy, Income Assistance and Disability, Employment Standards, and Human Rights law;
engage in negotiations and mediations on administrative law matters;
represent clients in judicial reviews and other administrative appeals;
represent clients in various civil, human rights, and bylaw matters as they arise;
provide public legal education presentations to community organizations concerning legal rights, responsibilities and entitlements; and,
prepare activity reports to the funders of this position and TAPS Executive Director.
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Education, and Skills
The successful candidate should:
be a practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia, or called to the bar in another province and be eligible for transfer to British Columbia;
have experience in the practice of poverty law, policy reform, or a demonstrated interested in poverty law;
be able to work with legal advocates and poverty lawyers across British Columbia to identify systemic barriers affecting low-income people;
have strong computer literacy, and be comfortable speaking to media and the general public about poverty law issues; and,
be capable of working from an anti-oppressive practice perspective with individuals who are experiencing a high level of challenges.
Hours of Work and Salary
This position is full-time (5 days/week or 35 hours/week), although a 4-day work week would be considered. TAPS staff are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 374, and this position is covered by the TAPS Collective Agreement. The starting salary for this position pays a minimum of $68,000 or greater, depending on experience and year of call, up to a maximum of $110,000. (Salary Range: $68,000 - $110,000).
Position Funding and Scope
This position is provided through a generous grant from the Law Foundation of British Columbia. The TAPS Staff Lawyer works closely with the community of Law Foundation funded poverty law clinics across the province, complimenting and supporting the work of Law Foundation funded legal advocates. While the majority of work is confined to the Greater Victoria area, our staff lawyer also provides support to legal advocates throughout Vancouver Island, and travel may occasionally be required.
