Front Desk Reception
We always need people to work on our busy front desk, welcoming clients to the office and answering the phone. This is a great way to “get your feet wet” as you soon get a comprehensive feel for the work that TAPS does. This is a demanding job, one that is vitally important and valuable to our organization. It requires good communication skills, an ability to manage in a busy work environment, crisis management skills and a non-judgmental attitude.
Time: one 3½-hour shift per week
Volunteer Disability Advocacy
Volunteer disability advocates work one-on-one with clients applying for Person with a Disability status through the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance. Volunteer advocates may also work with their clients through the appeal process. There is an additional screening process for this position and volunteers must participate in an intensive training program provided by TAPS.
Volunteer Disability Advocates must have organizational, writing, and analytical thinking skills and be able to conduct presentations before tribunals.
Time: 4 to 6 hours per week
Silent Witness
After an intensive training workshop, the volunteer will accompany individual clients to appointments with Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance staff. The role of the Silent Witness is to provide a quiet supportive presence and to record the proceedings of the appointment. The Silent Witness submits a written report of the meeting to the overseeing staff advocate. The volunteer must have good communication skills, be able to take notes, and have a non-judgmental attitude.
